Some people experiment with mushrooms for their psychedelic effects. Panaeolus bisporus has become a bit more difficult to find because it is now one of the most popular magic mushroom strains on the black market. Take a look at some vital facts!
Panaeolus Bisporus Overview
Panaeolus bisporus (Copelandia bisporus) are a psilocybin-containing mushroom, which is commonly known as a magic mushroom. They are found worldwide and form in locations such as pastures, grasslands and lawns. Look for them in Switzerland, Hawaii, Spain and North Africa and California. Panaeolus grow in a range of different colors, including white, brown, bruising blue and yellow.
Appearance
Panaeolus bisporus is a mushroom that grows in cow dung, and it has a distinct color and shape. This mushroom is grayish-brown with a conic or bell-shaped cap. The size of this mushroom varies from 2 to 5 inches tall, with diameter ranging from 1 to 3 inches. The cap gets lighter gradually towards the center and has dark gray gills underneath. The stalk or stipe is hollow, fragile, and it is not differentiated from the cap. The spores are black.
Habitat and Distribution
The Panaeolus bisporus grows on cow dung but can also be found growing on manure piles, compost piles or rich garden soil with plenty of organic matter added to it. The spores are spread by wind dispersal, but this species is not known for being a very effective spore producer compared to other mushrooms such as Psilocybe cubensis, which produces copious amounts of spores when mature enough.
Chemistry and Effects of Panaeolus Bisporus
The chemical makeup of the Panaeolus bisporus has been well documented by scientists. The main component is psilocybin, which is a psychoactive alkaloid with similar effects as LSD or mescaline. This mushroom also contains psilocin, which is an active metabolite of psilocybin. While these chemicals can be dangerous when taken on their own, they have been shown to have positive effects when used in conjunction with therapy for mental illness or drug dependency.
Growing Panaeolus Bisporus in Soil
The easiest way to grow these shrooms is by using sterilized compost in pots or bags. Once you have sterilized the compost, you can inoculate it with mycelium from the spores of your choice.
You will have to wait for about three weeks before you see any signs of growth on the compost. You can then transfer them into bigger containers, where they will continue to grow until they reach maturity. In total, it usually takes about 3 months before you harvest your first crop of magic mushrooms!
Selecting Your Substrate
There are many things to keep in mind when growing these mushrooms at home, including: carefully selecting your substrate. You should only use fresh substrates such as rice, rye or wheat bran instead of dried ones like grains or sawdust. This will allow you to grow bigger fruits with larger caps than if you used dried substrates.
