Psilocybe pelliculosa, also known as the “Liberty Cap,” is a magic mushroom that you can forage for in your local area. It is a wild edible fungus cannabis. In order to avoid any mistakes with identifying these shrooms, make sure you read our guide!
Psilocybe Pelliculosa Overview
Psilocybe pelliculosa grew abundantly throughout Europe and North America during the late 19th century. They were often eaten by adults who believed in the healing properties of Psilocybe pelliculosa mushrooms. They would also eat them just to get high.
This species is a psychedelic mushroom which contains psilocybin and psilocin when dried. It can be used in the preparation of various entheogenic compounds. Ingesting Psilocybe pelliculosa mushrooms can make you experience visuals, euphoria, and distortion. They are described to be moderately poisonous. However, they cause no physical damage, they only upset your normal mental state.
Appearance
The Psilocybe pelliculosa mushroom is a magic mushroom that can be found on the West Coast of North America, most commonly in coastal areas. It has a cap that is around 1 inch wide and typically dark reddish-brown when it’s wet, but fades to light brown or tan when it dries. The stipe, or stem, is white and ranges from 0,3 to 1,1 inch long by 0,03 inch thick. If you see a cap with a dark purple spore print, and a thin white stipe with no ring around it, you’re probably looking at Psilocybe pelliculosa.
Psylocybin Mushroom Growth and Habitat
Psilocybe pelliculosa, also known as conifer Psilocybe, is a psychedelic mushroom that naturally grows in the northern regions of the Pacific Northwest in the United States. This species of magic mushroom can be found growing in dense clusters on rotting wood and bark, especially in redwood forests plentiful with conifers.
While most species of magic mushrooms thrive in warm and humid climates, Psilocybe pelliculosa is unique because it can grow even in low temperatures. This is because this type has thicker cell walls and more chitin (a substance that makes up fungi, insects’ hard exoskeletons and crustaceans’ shells) than other types of magic mushrooms.
Harvesting
Because they have higher levels of chitin, harvesting Psilocybe pelliculosa can be challenging; most cultivators use a specialized knife to cut through their tough cell walls. However, Psilocybe pelliculosa does not generally require additional maintenance or care once it has been harvested. Like most species of magic mushrooms, it is not typically grown for consumption; rather, these kinds are simply wild crafted as needed.
Psilocybe Semilanceata Confusion
A common mistake in identifying Psilocybe pelliculosa is confusing it with Psilocybe semilanceata (another species known as the “liberty cap”). The easiest way to identify these two psilocybin mushrooms is by the shape of their caps. The cap of Psilocybe pelliculosa is noticeably convex or even bulbous, while the cap of Psilocybe semilanceata is more flat and wavy. Another distinguishing characteristic between these two species is that the gills on Psilocybe pelliculosa are often not attached to the stem. They typically only connect at the very bottom part of the stem.
Potency and Effects
The potency of this mushroom varies greatly. Some users say that they have experienced only mild visual distortions from eating 0.17 oz fresh, while others have reported intense hallucinations from ingesting just 0.07 oz fresh.
It’s also thought that Psilocybe pelliculosa can vary in potency depending upon where it was picked and its age when it was picked. For instance, this mushroom may be less potent if it’s picked before its veil breaks or if it is picked after the first few days of rain following a dry spell. It may also be more potent if it grows near other hallucinogenic fungi.
Kick-In Time
Psilocybe pelliculosa has a very strong psilocybin content, which means it tends to induce intense hallucinations, euphoria, drowsiness, and feelings of distortion. These effects typically begin within 20 minutes of consuming the mushroom, and may last up to five hours.
While Psilocybe pelliculosa has been used for centuries as a source of spiritual guidance and healing, it should be noted that this type of mushroom grows naturally in areas that are contaminated with heavy metals such as zinc. This may lead to nausea and other unpleasant side effects.
Dosage Information
The effects of Psilocybe pelliculosa are highly variable, and depend on the individual user, the quantity ingested, and the circumstances under which it is used. The effects can last from three to six hours, depending on the dosage. Doses can range from about 0,03 oz to about 0,07 oz (dried material), for most people.
However, doses have been reported as high as 0,1 oz by experienced users. Some experienced users report that doses ranging from 1,7-2 oz produce extreme visual hallucinations and a feeling of being completely removed from reality.
